by Tracy Chevalier
One of the reasons why I recommend you don't read this book because it's a kind of book that makes you fall asleep every ten minutes. The setting of this novel is 15th century Delft, Holland, a place that we're not so familiar with. Since I was not able to imagine this place in my head as a read through, only things that came to mind were if the main character was hot or not and windmills. There were also too much details about the characters, the paintings and etc. There are parts when Griet, the main character and the maid, goes into her master's studio to clean. Chevalier puts an excess of details in the painting that Griet sees while putting details about Griet. Many parts of this book brought confusion as I read along and as a consequence, I fell asleep very many times. Another reason why I don't recommend this book is because the plot in general is boring. There is nothing in this book that sparks the reader's mind of excitement and force the reader to stay up all night reading it. It actually forces the reader to sleep.
"Girl with Pearl Earring" already exists in a film and two main characters, Griet and Johannes Vermeer, are played by Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth. I think Diane Kruger and George Clooney would do a very good job of these two characters because Diane Kruger can show calmness and respectfulness while George Clooney can provide gentleness and strength to the character.
For the soundtrack of this book, I wouldn't put any thrill or excitement to the music because the book is very slow paced. When Griet finds out that there has been a plague around her family's territory, she collapses with sorrow. Danny Boy would be a great song because it is slow paced and it brings out the grief. I'm sure this song is very melancholy because our band played this song during last year's Rememberance Day ceremony.
